Explore the fascinating history of the Rolex GMT-Master II, from its aviation roots to modern icon status. Discover why it's loved by travelers and collectors alike.
Ever spot a Rolex GMT-Master II on someone's wrist and wonder why people make such a fuss about it? Sure, it looks great—but there's more going on here. It's about adventure, jet-setting, and the fascinating little stories which hide behind each detail. With all this in mind, we're taking an opportunity to dive into what makes the GMT-Master II such a big deal to watch fans, travelers, and important collectors alike.
Back in 1955, Pan Am Airlines ran into a real-life issue: their pilots kept losing track of time zones on those long-haul flights. Rolex stepped in and whipped up something clever—a rotating bezel split into two distinct colors: red denoting daytime, and blue signalling night. Early executions, namely the Reference 6542 GMT-Master, had tons of charm but weren't exactly bulletproof as a result of their radium luminous applications, and crack-prone Bakelite bezel inserts. Rolex caught on fast, switching things up with durable aluminum bezels and adding crown guards, resulting in the subsequent Ref. 1675, which was more or less the perfect for watch for daring pilots—and anyone who dreamed of hopping around the globe.
Fast forward to 1983—Rolex launched the GMT-Master II, and they weren't messing around. The big upgrade? Now you could adjust the hour hand independently from the GMT hand. Sounds minor, but ask anyone who travels constantly—it was a game-changer. The first GMT-Master II, reference 16760, even got a quirky nickname, the "Fat Lady," thanks to its thicker-than-usual case. This reference also notably introduced the black-and-red “Coke” bezel configuration, quickly becoming iconic. Suddenly, this watch wasn’t just about pilots—it became the ultimate travel companion for anyone hopping between time zones.
Rolex didn't rest on their laurels. Throughout the late '80s into the 2000s, they kept tweaking and perfecting this high-flying icon. Collectors met the reference 16710 with a great deal of enthusiasm in that Rolex offered the option of Pepsi, Coke, and plain black bezels– capable of being swapped whenever you so please. Around this time, Rolex also incorporated sapphire crystals into the GMT-Master II, boosting durability in no small way. Fast forward to the mid-2000s, and Rolex introduced the Maxi-cased GMT-Master II, notably featuring Cerachrom bezels, which didn't scratch or fade nearly as easily. It was Rolex’s subtle flex, reminding everyone they knew how to keep the GMT’s spirit alive while pushing it into the future.
Lately, the GMT-Master II has been hotter than ever, especially the the ceramic bezel-fitted "Pepsi," secured to the wrist using a decidedly upscale feeling Jubilee bracelet (Ref. 126710BLRO). Newer references have quickly caught the attention and earned the admiration of seasoned and green collectors alike. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that celebs, athletes, and other noteworthy figures seem to be spotted wearing the travel-ready icon almost constantly. More than just a watch, the GMT-Master II now represents success, style, and a dash of adventure—a bit of wrist-worn storytelling.
What makes the GMT-Master II still so appealing? Maybe it’s the practical features, or perhaps it's that timeless, effortlessly cool design. Or it could be the stories—the fact that it carries decades of travel, innovation, and a sense of exploration on your wrist.
