Collector’s Gene Radio’s Cameron Ross Steiner shares his current watch must-haves—from a stealthy Cartier Panthère to a quietly perfect Patek World Time.
Cameron Ross Steiner has a way of noticing things others overlook. As the voice behind Collector’s Gene Radio, he isn’t just another collector running through the usual talking points. His interviews lean into the why, not just the what — digging beneath the surface to get at the personal quirks and instincts that shape a collection.
For this edition of Must-Haves, Cameron brings that same attention to detail to a list of watches that feel personal, thought-through, and a little unexpected. These aren’t just crowd-pleasers—they reflect the lens of a collector who values nuance, proportion, and pieces that wear as well as they look.

This reference, and its rose gold sibling with the chocolate dial, have always been slept on. With green dials having their moment and collectors leaning back toward classic sizes, this offers serious value to anyone looking for a Day-Date that stands out without shouting.
This grey quadrant dial is amazing–it’s really stealthy and reminds me of the slate, “ghost” dial Santos Carrée. It’s undoubtedly a much more compelling and off-the-cuff alternative to the standard white dial Panthère offerings.
A Patek Philippe World Time for around $30k is tough to beat. At 37mm, it wears just right, especially on a taupe Epsom strap. It’s one of those watches that quietly does everything well without trying too hard.
When IWC released this watch I was so excited. The Mojave treatment has long been given to much larger pieces in IWC’s lineup, and it was about time they released it in a more wearable form factor. It’s even better in person and a delight on the wrist.
Upon its release, this watch was met with a great deal of uncertainty, but the more I see it on the wrist of other important collectors, the more I want one. Toss it on the rubber strap, and it’s pretty perfect–it doesn’t hurt that it’s titanium, either!
I love the reference 3738–it wears much better than its larger-cased successor and usually comes with a much more attractive price tag. This white gold configuration is really compelling. It’s a great watch, a fantastic value, and an absolute classic in the Patek Philippe lineage.
My favorite Speedy, hands down. It has the depth and character you want from the vintage pieces, but with a bracelet that’s way more comfortable and often available under retail. On strap or bracelet, it’s just easy to wear and easy to love.
A modern, thoughtful take on the classic Patek 2597. The Traveller is a true companion — elegant, functional, and finished to the standard we expect from Laurent Ferrier, but with its own point of view.
