Since Tudor’s return to the North American market in 2013, the Rolex sister brand has delighted collectors with hit after accessibly-priced hit, each one channeling the peerless heritage of both brands in unmistakable style. Having said that, Tudor is no stranger to daring designs that deviate from the norm while still honoring the established aesthetics of their most celebrated collections—case in point: the special edition Black Bay Chrono Dark.
Distinguished by its black PVD-coated case and bracelet, the Black Bay Chrono Dark was first introduced in September 2019 and produced to celebrate the watchmaker’s partnerships with the 2019 Rugby World Cup and New Zealand’s national rugby team, the All Blacks. Limited to just 1181 pieces for the global market, this column wheel chronograph-equipped reference’s darkness is certainly matched by its rarity.
With a history tracing back over eight decades, the Big Pilot’s Watch is truly inseparable from the histories of both IWC and purpose-built watchmaking as a whole. Emphasizing legibility and ease of use by way of its bold, luminous dial and onion-shaped crown, the high-flying legend’s renown is certainly well deserved.
For those after a Big Pilot’s Watch with a twist, the reference IW5029-02 ought to be on your radar. Cased in matte black ceramic and considerably complicated thanks to the incorporation of a perpetual calendar, this piece from the Schaffhausen-based watchmaker’s “TOP GUN” series turns everything you’ve come to know about the Big Pilot’s Watch on its head, in all the right ways.
Reimagining the iconic Royal Oak in a radically modern form, this reference was introduced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Audemars Piguet’s pioneering luxury sports watch. For the first time, AP presents the chronograph-equipped Royal Oak in full black ceramic, affording the watch an extremely comfortable feel on the wrist and scratch-resistant properties.
Despite its all-black aesthetic, this highly sought-after reference from the famed Holy Trinity watchmaker remains nothing-if-not luxurious upon first glance, catching the light in all the right ways with its multi-faceted case architecture and variety of finishes. The icing on the cake? Rose gold dial furniture accenting its Grande Tapisserie-finished black dial, adding just the right amount of flash to an otherwise stealthy chronograph.
When collectors think of Cartier, all-black watches are typically not the first thing that comes to mind. However, the Maison is undeniably talented in this horological domain, notably producing pitch-dark variants of some of its most lauded designs in recent years. Over the last few decades, the Santos de Cartier has received the all-black treatment several times, but the latest interpretation is arguably Cartier’s best effort yet.
Coated in amorphous diamond-like carbon at 200° Celsius, the Santos’ black case finish is extremely hard and smooth, boasting a nearly scratch-free and fingerprint-proof surface. Paired with a matching black dial and contrasting steel screws adorning its bezel, this dark-as-night Santos de Cartier is hard to resist.
Perhaps the most visually arresting and alternatively-styled Speedmaster in the history of the important Omega chronograph, the Dark Side of the Moon “Apollo 8” is set apart by its partially skeletonized dial, featuring a finish inspired by the lunar surface. Contrasting yellow accents intensify its appeal, adding a dash of electricity to its intricate appearance.
Hailing from the Swiss watchmaker’s “Dark Side of the Moon” series, this reference naturally features an all-black aesthetic, though, unlike inky offerings from other brands, Omega opts for lightweight, matte black ceramic in place of a perhaps more easily produced, coated stainless steel case. Beyond its lightweight advantage, this also affords the Speedmaster scratch-resistant properties.
